Summer is upon us, and we have compiled a list of tips to make sure your air conditioner is ready to perform.
Have your unit serviced this spring before you actually need it especially if you have had prior issues with it.
Before you mow the yard the first time go to your outside unit and make sure thermostat wiring is up off the ground. We get many calls in the summer that results in thermostat wires being hit with the weedeater.
If you see any ice on your outdoor unit or indoor unit turn your unit off but leave the fan “ON”. This will help thaw the unit so when your HVAC company arrives they can begin repairs.
Change your air filter. Do not use the expensive “air filters”. These air filters restrict airflow immensely. If you have allergies consider having an air purifier installed.
Do not blow grass into your outdoor unit with the lawn mower.
If you have a breaker that “trips” do not try to reset it. Call your HVAC company.
If your drain line stops up try sucking out your drain line with a shop vac.
Every unit should have a drain line safety switch installed to prevent flooding in the event of a clogged drain line.
Cut bushes back from your outdoor unit at least 18”- If your unit isn’t working and you make an appointment with a HVAC company do not cancel it because your unit starts working again.
Air conditioners should not need Freon added to them every year. If you have to add freon to your unit ask your HVAC company to find the leak and repair it.
If your air filter is near the floor move furniture away from it so air can pass.
If your air conditioner quit at the end of last year do not wait until the first hot week to call for repairs as this could put you on a long wait list.
Do not allow dogs to urinate on your outdoor unit. This will cause freon leaks to the outdoor unit and can result in very costly repairs.
Dog urine on condensers literally ruins them. Keep your dogs and other animals from urinating on the outdoor units to ensure the cooling fins will not corrode.
Now is the time to be proactive and get your HVAC system checked.
